Young Readers Program Grant

A check for $6,000 from the PMB Rotary was presented to Cornerstone Christian Academy for the Young Readers program by Rich Scott and Carla Chieffo.

Young Readers is a phonics-based summer program, designed to build literacy and comprehension skills for 1st thru 3rd grade children so that they are reading on grade level by 4th grade.  Nationally, only 17% of low-income 4th graders read at a proficient level.  Studies show that low-income children who are not reading on grade level by 4th grade are far more likely to drop out of high school than his or her middle-income, proficient reader peer.  Cornerstone’s Young Readers program is designed to help address this issue.
